Two days ago, Microsoft started using an official account on Instagram with the first post of a short video called “#DoMore”. It means Microsoft just became more open, which is definitely good.
However, the pity is that the Instagram Beta of Windows Phone still has no uploading function for short videos. That’s why there were so many questions below about which cellphone Microsoft used to send the first post. “We used Windows Movie Maker to upload that short video on Windows Phone.” The company had to respond. And the following three posts are all images.
Instagram is just a part of the disparity of Windows Phone from Android/iOS: Firstly, many apps are not available for Windows Phone. After the app finally works on, it might not be that user-friendly as that on other platforms. Besides, this version hasn’t been maintained well, so function updates are delayed. For the complete Instagram, WP users have to use a third-party app like 6Tag.
As the fact that medias found: Not just on third-party apps, the phenomenon that iOS/Android version is better than Windows version also happened on those developed by Microsoft. The company released the Office for free particularly on touchscreen of iOS and Android, while Windows Phone missed the “bonus”. Skype on iPhone is also better than that on WP.
Recently industries have seen the progress Microsoft made to be open and multi-platform. It’s main services including Office, OneDrive and OneNote have realize multi-platform, meanwhile those of Android, iOS, Web and Windows Phone are under maintenance. The voice assistant Cortana will be available on iOS and Android. Net will become open-source, and Visual Studio will be supported on Linux, Mac, Android and iOS. The new VS will be even equipped with Android simulator.
It seems Nadella’s new policy “Mobile first, cloud first” is totally different from Ballmer’s thought “Devices and serivces”.
