In the second quarter of 2015, worldwide PC shipments declined 11.8% compared to the same period one year ago, accordin to a report released by IDC (International Documentation Center) on Thursday.
Overall, manufacturers shipped 66.1 million units worldwide, including desktops and laptops that run Microsoft Windows and other operating systems. That was a little bit less than expected.
In the report, IDS stated that the declines were brought in part because during the same period in 2014, PC were boosted by people purchasing new computers to upgrade from Windows XP – the system that Microsoft terminated supporting in April of that year.
Moreover, in the second quarter, manufacturers’ channel partners reduced inventory in preparation for new devices running Windows 10, which led to shipment declines. Customers outside the U.S. were also influenced by shifting exchange rates that at times raised the prices for computers overseas at some foreign currencies weakened relative to the dollar.
